Mr. Clarence Hilyard Sykes, 90, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2021. He was born on September 15, 1930 in Surry County to Malon Sykes and Bertha Sykes. Clarence grew up on a farm in Surry County, and then later moved to what was formerly known as Hanestown. He joined the Army when he was only 17 and served from 1947 to 1951. Clarence had to go to Korea to serve during the war. After he finished his time in the military, he came back and finished high school and then received his associate degree. Clarence married his sweetheart, Lois Diane Hardiman. He always enjoyed working in the yard, going to the YMCA, and having breakfast with his friends at Cagney’s Kitchen. In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Sykes and siblings, Marie Macy, Lorene Crouse, Roby Sykes, and Lenard Sykes. Surviving are his son, Brandon Sykes; sister, Doris Watson (Larry); and 21 nieces and nephews. A private funeral service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment will follow at Bailey’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
