Charles Henry Whitaker, Jr.

Rev. Charles Henry Whitaker Jr., 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 10, 2017.

Charles was born February 29, 1936 in Davidson County to Charles Henry Whitaker Sr. and Effie McElrath. Charles served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1961. He came home and married the love of his life Shirley Sapp on June 15, 1955. He was an avid animal lover and accepted all strays no matter what the species. He had many accomplishments which included race car driving; pilot of single engine plane and semi-professional bowler. He also loved to play golf. He was the owner and operator of Whitaker Automotive, which was a family affair. He earned his Captain License for small charter boats and most of all a Minister of the Gospel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Whitaker; grandson, Joshua Norman and great grandson Nicholas Warren.

Charles is survived by his wife Shirley of the home; daughter, Sheree Warren and husband Charles; son, Charles Kendell Whitaker and wife Tommie; one sister, Carolyn Fitzgerald; one brother, Gary Whitaker and wife Carol. He has nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Gene Chitwood officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 6-8pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
