Mr. Charles E. Smith, 83, of Advance passed away Monday, March 12, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 28, 1928 in Davie County to Ottis Helsabeck and Lola Howard Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and a former member of the Smith Grove Ruritan Club. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from Taylor Oil with a million mile safe driving record. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Elbert and Arnold Smith and two sisters, Norma Cook and Ella Smith. He is survived by his wife, Ima Jean Cook Smith of the home; a daughter, Glenda Leigh Howard and husband Farley of Chesterfield, SC and a son, Donald Gray Smith of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Dana Leigh Courtemanche and husband Jared of Jacksonville, NC, Kelly Dawn Woodard of Advance and Kenneth Vann Smith of Winston-Salem; a great granddaughter, Keira McKinney; a brother, Hebert Smith and three sisters, Elsie Black, Maxine Boger and Jean West. A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. Barry Lemons officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be at 11:00 am Thursday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Mausoleum.
