Charles Poss

Charles Calvin Poss, known as Calvin, passed away on September 3, 2021 at the age of 69, in Forsyth County, North Carolina. His prolonged battle with serious medical issues in recent years demonstrated tremendous courage in facing life’s challenges the way everyone should – with grace, and accented with salty expletives.

Calvin was born on December 18th, 1951 to Brady and Elva Poss in Forsyth county, North Carolina. At Parkland High school, Calvin played football and was a dedicated wrestler. He passed his passion for sports down to his sons and grandsons. We are waiting to see if his only granddaughter will also excel in sports, or if she will remain his dainty princess forever– time will tell. After graduating in 1970, Calvin joined the Navy and served our country for four years during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he discovered a never ending love for motorcycles he shared with best buddies, Ron Melton and Joe Smith.

Calvin was a man of many passions, from Great Danes and horses to drawing on his nieces and nephews to give them their first “tattoos”, fried chicken, diet Mountain Dew, to Perry Mason and any old western film he could find. There wasn’t a NASCAR race day that went by where Calvin wasn’t glued to the TV. Should his favorite driver lose, he would explain, in detail and with enthusiasm, what he would’ve done differently to win the race.

Above all others was his passion for being involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Dance recital or baseball, football, or soccer game, this proud Daddy and Grandpa was there. As much as his children hate to admit it, he really did know (almost) everything about (almost) everything. He loved giving advice, and if you were smart, you took what he said to heart.

He had the most beautiful smile & his boisterous laughter, although often at his own dad jokes, was contagious.

He was a man who held many titles through the years – son, brother, friend, uncle … and few that we’ll keep to ourselves to spare his grandchildren’s young ears. His favorite, however, was Daddy.

Calvin is preceded in death by his parents and by his son Brady Poss. He is survived by his daughter Jaime Willeford (Michael), son Matthew Poss (Erin) and so many other very special family and friends who will miss him dearly. He took extreme pride in his grandchildren Bradley Willeford, Noah Willeford, and Lyla Poss. They were the absolute joy of his life and he made sure they knew that. Ice cream trips after sports games with the boys, and building mega blocks and signing the itsy bitsy spider with Lyla made the top of his to do list at every visit.

This is not goodbye, this is simply “see you later.” Lay some rubber down on those streets of gold, Calvin.

There will be a small visitation on Friday, September the 10th, 2021, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Disabled American Veterans charity, 251 N. Main Street #116, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Cooperation in wearing masks will be expected and appreciated.
