Charles Lindsay Paul

Dr Charles Lindsay Paul, Col., USA, Ret.  91, of Clemmons, NC passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on March 24, 2023 after what he referred to as having lived a charmed life.

Charles, one was of four children born to Richard H. and Mildred Frances Landis Paul, was born on March 16, 1932 in Moundsville, West Virginia.  After graduating from Elkins High School in Elkins, West Virginia, he went on to study at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio for 3 years before attending and graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.  He was commissioned into the US Army and attended the University of Missouri- Kansas City School of Dentistry orthodontic residency program.

Charles served in the US Army Dental Corp for 22 years, with tours of duty in Fort Gordon- Georgia, Fairbanks-Alaska, Fort Leavenworth-Kansas, Fort Bragg-NC, Heidelberg and Frankfurt Germany. While stationed in Heidelberg, he lectured on orthodontics at the University of Heidelberg. During his career he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Upon retirement, he returned to North Carolina and for 16 years practiced as an orthodontist at Winston-Salem Dental Care.

While home in Elkins, West Virginia from college, Charles met the love of his life, Alene, at GC Murphy Department Store where she worked and his dad managed . They were affectionately known by friends and family as Chic and Al.  Married for 57 years, they raised 2 daughters, Cathy and Karen.

Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife Alene, daughters Linda Diane and Terry Ann, parents Richard and Mildred Paul, and brother and sister in law Richard and Nancy Paul. He is survived by daughters Cathy Phelps (Steve ), Karen Faske (Joe), sisters Gayle Moore (Dick), Neva Georgeson (Bob) and a host of nieces and nephews. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Andrew Phelps (Stacey), Brian Phelps (Alisha), Zachary Faske (Tiffany), Sarah Faure (Tristan), Caitlin Kapur (Nick)  and his great grandchildren Evelyn Phelps, Adelaide Phelps, Hadley Phelps and Maverick Faske.

The family would like to express sincere thanks to staff like family at Pete’s , Clemmons Kitchen and Mi Pueblo for their love and kindness to dad. Special thanks to the staff at Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home for their compassion and care with dignity of “Dr Paul”.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Hayworth- Miller Kinderton Chapel.  Reverend Mike Horne from First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem will officiate.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem, Clemmons Food Pantry,  or Samaritan Ministries of Winston Salem
