KERNERSVILLE - Charles H. James went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 14, 2012. He died peacefully in his home. Charles was born on November 7, 1921 in Walnut Cove, NC, and was the son of the late William Edgar James and Fannie Hutchens James of Kernersville, NC. Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Charles was a member of the local American Legion for 65 years and served as former Commander. He managed Kernersville's American Legion baseball team. Charles was also a member of the Oscar L. Joyner VFW (Post 5352). He retired from R. J. Reynolds after working there for 27 years. Charles served as a Deacon of the Kernersville Church of Christ. He also served as a Sunday school teacher and song leader for the church. He was a self-taught musician and played the guitar, dobro, and harmonica. He performed with the Sugar Sticks Choir. Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Griffin James, and brothers Henry, George, Calvin (Bowlie), Walter, Rufus, and Matt James, and sister Sara James Reynolds. He is survived by his wife Helen Farrington James of Kernersville; son Ronald Wade James of Kernersville; daughter Brenda James Vawter and husband Donald Vawter of Mebane; grandchildren Jeffrey Vawter and wife Jennifer Vawter of Charlotte; Chad Vawter and wife Heather Vawter of Chapel Hill; Crystal James Faircloth and husband Chris Faircloth of High Point; Carrie James Snyder and husband Jason Snyder of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren Emma, John Solomon, and Finn Vawter of Chapel Hill; Jadon and Matthew Vawter of Charlotte; Bailey Faircloth of High Point; and Allie, Gavin, and Gage Snyder of Suffolk; sisters Mary Ferguson of High Point, Nan Delappe of High Point, Bitha James of Kernersville, Mabel Cawley of Lexington, and Emma Hardin of Greensboro; stepdaughter Joann Stephens, husband Frank and family of Winston-Salem; stepson Johnny Farrington and family of Kernersville; and his many nephews and nieces. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Kernersville Church of Christ with Rev. Larry Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM Saturday, June 16, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel . In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Family Life Center of Kernersville Church of Christ, 1016 Salisbury St, Kernersville, NC 27284. The family wishes to express appreciation to KBR Hospice Center in Winston-Salem, NC.
