Mr. Cecil Edgar Houck, Jr., 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Cecil was born in Ashe County, NC on November 26, 1933, to the late Cecil Edgar Houck, Sr. and Muncie Conner Houck. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. During his time in service, he severely damaged his hearing in both ears. Cecil did not let his hearing loss slow him down, he went on to get his teaching degree from Appalachian State University and a Master’s degree from Virginia Tech. He loved teaching and helping others. After he moved to Winston-Salem to retire, he was often with his brothers helping them with their businesses and projects. Gardening was a passion of his and he enjoyed watching plants grow. His green thumb was admired by all. TV Westerns were a favorite and in later years he was often seen watching them with his little “Sweetheart” Rosie. Swinging on the back porch looking over his “Ponderosa” was a favorite pastime of his. In addition to his parents, Cecil was preceded in death his wife, Shirley May Houck and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Pam Houck of Winston-Salem and his sweetheart fur baby, Rosie. Cecil is also survived by his siblings, Violet Ragan, Zella Norris, Sue Patella, James Houck, and Dean Houck. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. John Bishop officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 or the Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center, Low Income Hearing Aid Program, 741 Kenilworth Ave. Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28204.
