Caudis L. Hutchens, ""C.L."", passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 at his home. He was born in Patrick County, VA on March 22, 1928 to the late Rangley and Pearl Nelson Hutchens. Preceding him in death was his wife, Virginia Walton, son, Terry Hutchens who passed in 2002, sister, Sue Mickey and a brother, Max Hutchens. He was a native of Kernersville and attended Kernersville High School. At the age of 17, he went to Europe with the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He attended Guilford Technical School for two years. He then married Virginia Walton the mother of his three children. C.L. was a very active member of Union Cross Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Building Committee during the first phase of the church. He served as R.A. Director, taught Sunday school, and served as a deacon. He also coached basketball for the boy's league. He was owner of Environ Products. His hard work, honesty, integrity, and perseverance were the firm foundation of his life and family. People were drawn to him because of these traits. C.L. grew strength from all of the relationships he built from his customers throughout his career in which he retired in March 2010. Surviving is his wife of almost forty years, Ann Byrd Hutchens of the home; two daughters with whom he treasured their great bond, Jan Hutchens Richardson of Columbia, SC and Lynda Hutchens Mason and husband Charles of Huntersville; C.L. and Ann have been blessed with three grandsons, James Dale Richardson, Ryan Mason, and Landon Mason; also surviving is one sister, Trilba Hutchens Strader and husband Lane and a brother-in-law, Richard Mickey and numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved family in Tennessee. A memorial service will be held 6:30 PM Monday, May 3, 2010 at Shallowford Presbyterian Church with Pastor Rob Evans officiating. A military service will follow at the church columbarium and labyrinth. The family will receive friends following the service at the Arnold Hall at the church. The family would like to send thanks to all our families, church family, friends, and neighbors who helped strengthen us when life wavered around us over the past two years; also a special thanks to Dr. Ray Morrow, Dr. Dean Harris, Myriah Cox, Karen Fuller, Barbara Moore, and Kathy Oakley for all the care they provided.
