Catherine Cardwell Whitney

Catherine Davis Cardwell Whitney of Winston-Salem was born January 19, 1922 a wonderful blessing to her parents Jesse Davis and Etta Whitaker Cardwell who are deceased. She was married to Merle C. Whitney Jr. on Christmas Day 1942. They celebrated their sixty sixth anniversary last December. He always said she was the most gorgeous, sweetest, and nicest person he ever met. Merle had the opportunity and pleasure of knowing her for seventy years. Everyone that knew her well; loved her. Her main concern was to be the best wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was always their pillar of strength and a wonderful homemaker. During her life she was an avid bridge player and a designer of accessories. After her children were grown, she joined the family business, Whitney Decorating Co., which was founded by her husband and son, Merle Clarence ""Sonny"" Whitney III. She retired in 1984. She is survived by four children, daughter, Lynne Whitney Pruette, and her husband, D.M. ""Sonny"" Pruette, of Concord, N.C., three sons, Merle C. Whitney III of Advance N.C., Philip R. Whitney of Winston-Salem, and Gordon K. Whitney and wife, Donna Whitney, of Advance, N.C. Seven grandchildren, Mary Catherine Pruette Troxler and her husband, Jon Troxler, of Cary, N.C., P. Taylor Pruette and his wife, Margaret Pruette, of Concord, N.C., R. Blair Pruette of Hampstead, N.C., Hunter Pruette and wife Cozumel Pruette of Baltimore, MD, Brooke A. Whitney of Sydney, Australia, Blake S. Whitney of Fort Myers, Florida, and Davis K. Whitney of Advance, N.C. Five great grandchildren and an only sister Virginia ""Pete"" Crater of Winston-Salem, N.C. Catherine loved her church and was a lifetime member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church. Her activities were numerous including Sunday School Teacher, Fellowship Leader, Diener, Chicken Pie Lady, Christmas Candle Trimming, and a volunteer for Project Linus. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 AM Friday, March 27, 2009 at Fries Memorial Moravian Church with Rev. Patti Garner and Rev. Davis Allen Marcus officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday at Hayworth-miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment will follow in Salem Moravian Graveyard ""God's Acre"". Memorials can be made to Fries Memorial Moravian Church.
