Carolyn Joan Riddle Marshall, 87, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2023 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Carolyn was a daughter of the late Carl and Ocie Helsabeck Riddle, sister of Peggy Riddle Taylor, and since December 31, 1969, wife of Paul Eugene Marshall. (Both survive).
Carolyn was on the varsity basketball team of Old Town High School, also in Quill and Scroll Society, Drama Club, Glee Club, a member of the Old Town Trio, a Vesper speaker, on the Crier staff, and graduated in 1954 as a member of the National Honor Society. She worked for Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem, then in Raleigh, and returned to work again for Wachovia in Winston-Salem. She also worked for the tax service, H & R Block. She was also a docent at Reynolda House.
Spurred by their travel program, she and Paul traveled extensively to Central America, Great Britain, Ireland, Holland, Germany, France, the US including Alaska and Hawaii, Japan, China, and Hong Kong. Carolyn and Paul were club members at the Winston-Salem/Wake Forest Wine Society, Third Wednesday Book Club, and Forsyth County Genealogical Society.
At Parkway United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem she was Council President, Treasurer, lay reader, and nursery keeper. Her assistance to an immigrant Vietnamese family in Waughtown has been acknowledged by decades of greeting cards. Carolyn was generous with her time, often hosting dinners and parties. She has been described as always being inviting, welcoming, kind, sweet, and full of grace and goodness.
More recently, she and Paul joined Calvary Moravian Church, succeeding her earlier membership at Mizpah, Bethania and Raleigh Moravian Churches.
Surviving Carolyn is her son, Mark G Marshall (Christine) of Bend, Oregon; her grandson in Washington state, Edward Ian Marshall (Kristen) and their two daughters, Sydney and Monica; and in Oregon her granddaughter, Carrie Faye Vaughn (Rafe) and their daughter, Thea.
Carolyn also leaves her sister, Peggy Taylor and children: Alan Taylor (Stephanie), Teresa Bodford (Terry) and their children Jennifer Roberts (Mark) and Morgan Smith (Joshua) and their daughter Ivy Lee Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
