Mrs. Carolyn Jane Clayton Brown, 88, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at her residence. She was born June 12, 1934, in Summerfield, the 8th child of the late Thomas Della Clayton and Janie Williams Clayton. Carolyn was a graduate of Summerfield High School, was married to Thomas F. (Tom) Brown in 1951, retired from Guilford County Schools (Oak Ridge Elementary), was a member of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Shepherd Servant Discipleship Class, and Mary Martha Circle, presently served on the Card Ministry and the Stamp Ministry, was past UMW president. She was a charter member of the Oak Ridge Lions Club in which she was chairperson of the Adopt A Highway program, the Eye Glass Collections, and Broom Committee, and was a Melvin Jones Fellow. She served on the Board of Directors of Oak Ridge Preservation and was in charge of the auctions for the Ai Church Restoration. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 53 years Thomas F. Brown in 2006; sons Richard K. Brown in 2012 and Thomas C. Brown in 2014; brothers Carl T. Clayton, Lt.Col. Michael P. Clayton, and William A. Clayton; sisters, Oleta C. Robinson, Irma C. Hagy, and Cynthia C. Curley. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Sandra B. Smith and husband, Tom; grandchildren, Lauren B. Shannahan (Jonathan) of Lafayette, IN, Andy Clayton Brown, Amber B. Middleton (Brian), Meredith B. Shoffner (Lionel), Shelby B. Smith, all of Oak Ridge, Stacey S. Bryant (Kyle) and Luke Brown (Sara), of Matthews, NC; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Juanita C. Howerton of Oak Ridge and several special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Carr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, November 18, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Ridge United Methodist Building Fund, the Oak Ridge Lions Club or to the Charity of one’s choice.
