Carol Ann Palermo Schmidlin went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was strong in her faith and dedication to her community and fierce in her independence and love for others. Her selflessness was second to none, as she spent her days dedicated to others in any capacity she could. The world was a better place because she was in it.
She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1939 to Anthony and Sblendora Palermo. Carol was the youngest of five children and graduated from Brush High School before marrying her sweetheart, Don Schmidlin, in 1961.
Carol couldn't wait to start a family; her four boys meant the world to her. As a stay-at-home mom to four boys, she had her hands full. Her grandchildren often asked her how she did it. Carol said she enjoyed every second of it.
Though she loved hosting loved ones at her home, serving at Holy Family Catholic Church, and playing Mahjong, Carol's favorite role was that of a grandparent. She treasured her time with her grandkids and loved being their Gramma Carol, never failing to send a birthday card, host Cookie Madness, or stuff Christmas stockings. Carol was more than a mother and grandmother. She was a true matriarch who made each member of her family feel important, cherished, and unconditionally loved.
Carol loved her community in Clemmons and Winston-Salem. She filled her days serving her church on the funeral committee, chauffeuring her friends to meals and appointments, and baking for her beloved neighbors and doctors. Even though Carol "retired” several years ago from her bookkeeping job at Chappell Heating & Air, she continued to work 1 day every week doing payroll and accounts payable.
Carol will always be remembered for her devotion to her faith, quick mind, selflessness, and love of her family. We'll always imagine hearing her say to the grandkids, "I love you a bushel and a peck" again. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Sblendora, her siblings, Anthony, Madeline, Nick, and Ray, and is survived by her sons, Dale (Patsy), Jim (Kim), John (Mary), and Steve (Janell), her grandchildren, Austin (Kristy), Christopher, Elizabeth (Jared), Rachel, Morgan (Jory), Reagan (Brian), Ben, Ashlyn, Jay, Kate, Kaitlyn and Quinn, and her great-grandchildren, Emma, Sophie, Jameson, Jackson, Hadley, and Russell.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 2, at 11:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, NC. Donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital would be greatly appreciated. Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel is assisting the family.
