Mrs. Carol Jean Farlow, 86, of Clemmons, NC passed away on November 16, 2023, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Funeral services for Mrs. Farlow will be at 3 PM on Friday December 1, 2023, at Clemmons Presbyterian Church, 3930 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC with the Reverend Leigh Wisner officiating. Interment will be at the VA National Cemetery in Salisbury. NC on Friday April 5, 2024, at 1 PM. The family will receive friends in the Atrium of the church after the service.
Carol was the second child born to Wesley and Ethelyn Carr of Enterprise, AL. She was born on October 27, 1937. She grew up in that community, became a member of County Line Baptist Church, where she made her decision of faith, and graduated from Enterprise High School.
After completing high school, she joined the US Air Force where she served for four years as a Chaplain’s Assistant. While she was in the Air Force she met her husband, James Oliver Farlow (Jim) of Johnstown, CO. They were wed at Orlando Air Force Base, FL on August 10, 1958. After completing military service Jim’s job took them to Bermuda, Hawaii, and Alaska where they witnessed the 1964 Good Friday earthquake (9.2). When Jim’s job took them to Pennsylvania she received a BA in History from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. A later move took them to Raleigh, NC where she received an MRE (Master of Religious Education) from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. In Raleigh she served as a social worker, rising to supervisor. Her final move occurred in 1986 when she and Jim moved to the Orlando, FL area where she continued her career in Social Services as a Supervisor in the Florida Department of Children and Families. After her retirement she continued to serve the children of her community as a Guardian Ad Litem in the Florida courts.
Carol Farlow leaves a legacy of faith, love, and service to family, community, and the nation. Over the years Carol served as a Sunday school teacher, church musician, and deacon. She was fierce both at work and in retirement in her advocacy and protection of others. She was proud of her heritage and family in Alabama, always finding a way to come home.
She was a lifelong learner and artist with many gifts and interests including music, history, literature, photography, gardening, cooking, tennis, travel, theology, family games, and in general living in the beauty of creation. With her husband Jim, Carol built a home that was a refuge for themselves, their children and their children’s families. Nana, as she was known by the children and grandchildren, looked forward to the special times – holidays and vacations – where she shared her joy, her music, and her gifts with them.
Carol is preceded in death by her father and mother, Wesley and Ethelyn Carr; her brother, Carlton Wesley Carr; and her sister, Janis Carr Gibson.
Carol is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jim Farlow; her son, James Franklin Farlow (Melanie); her daughter, Felicia Hancock (Jeff); four grandchildren, James Leonard Farlow, Laura Holmes (Dan), Angela Rumball (Jeremiah), and Brynn Farlow; four Great-grandchildren, Mykah Farlow, Annie England, Carolynn Holmes, and Clara Holmes; three Sisters, Mary Helen Penny, Sara Kyser, and Joyce Warren (Roger); and one brother, Charles Fleming Carr (Lyn).
