Carlos Middleton, 94, of Clemmons died Monday, May 25, 2009. He was born August 8, 1914 in Santa Rosa, New Mexico to John Booth and Cora Middleton. He grew up in East Laporte, near Sylva, NC. After his school years, he worked as a C.C.C. worker beautifying the new Blue Ridge Parkway. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the North African Campaign in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France and Germany. He was awarded five bronze stars and the good conduct medal. Soon after his discharge in 1945, he came to Winston-Salem where he used the GI Bill for training as a baker, but soon thereafter was hired by Western Electric Company where he worked until his retirement. Carlos met the love of his life, Erma Goodman and they were married on June 21, 1947. The couple were long-time members of Clemmons First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Carlos; two brothers, Charles and Johnny Middleton; and two sisters, Hazel Smith and Sue Hooper. Surviving are his wife, Erma Middleton; a brother, Jim Middleton and wife Mary Ruth; and a sister, Jesse Slate of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 28 at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The family would also like to thank the many neighbors and friends who devoted so much time assisting Carlos during his time of illness.
