Carl Hiatt Shields, 91, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on March 9, 2016. He was born January 2, 1925 in Forsyth County to the late Burley Eugene Shields and Stella Alspaugh Shields. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Blackburn Shields; five brothers: Sylvester, Robert, Koyt, Dallas, and Ray Shields; and a sister, Carolyn Shields Evans. Surviving are his children, Peggy Ann McLean (Ted), and Garland Ray Shields (Debbi); grandchildren, Mike McLean (Diane), Scott McLean, and Courtney Shields; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jake McLean, and Reynolds Bailey; and a sister, Catherine Shields Soots. Carl led a long, full, and fascinating life. He joined the military at age 17, and fed many a soldier as the Mess Sergeant stationed in Saipan during WWII. After returning from war, he utilized his knowledge of feeding crowds and opened Konnoak Restaurant with business partner Harry Clodfelter. For 23 years they ran the restaurant and earned a reputation for having the BEST hot dogs in town! After selling the restaurant in the 1980s, he began driving bus tours for Piedmont Coach Lines until he began to lose his sight to macular degeneration. He was also a pilot, served as Captain of the Winston-Salem Rescue Squad for many years, and was an active member of the Moose Lodge and Rosemont Baptist Church (happily catering his famous hot dogs for any and all!). Despite losing his sight, he remained stubbornly independent and could be found most Friday and Saturday nights dancing a perfect waltz and reveling in his deep and abiding love of country music until just before his 91st birthday. The family will receive the friends of this remarkable man Friday, March 11, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall from 6:00-8:00pm, and a graveside service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. A sincere, heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Clemmons Village I and Mountain Valley Hospice, whose open hearts, kind words, and spectacular standards of care have been nothing short of extraordinary. The family sincerely requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation at www.macular.org.
