Carl Alton C.A." Long, Sr.

Colfax-Carl Alton ""C.A."" Long, Sr., 84, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the V.A. Medical Center. He was born July 20, 1925 in Guilford Co. to the late William M. and Cammie ""Hettie"" Coffin Long. Mr. Long was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a 22 year retired military serviceman; just out of high school in 1943, at the age of 17, where he joined the US Navy Seabees and served 2 ½ yrs., discharging in 1946. After discharge, he immediately joined the US Army. He retired in 1965 where he proudly served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. He enjoyed cooking/being a chef and loved to play golf. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and serviceman. His wonderful smile, contagious laughter and intriguing stories will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Helen Elliott Long; his daughter, Linda Carlene Griebel, and son, Paul Ellis Long; brothers, Wm Wade Long, Charles Long; and a sister, Lorraine Long. Surviving are his son, Carl Alton ""Otto"" Long, Jr. of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, Karlee Anne Long, Krista B. Mitchell, Keith Bullard, Robert Ellis Long, Mary Elizabeth Long, step-granddaughters, Marsha Reynolds, and Brittany Caroll; three great-grandchildren, Chad Alan Mitchell, Jakob Mitchell, and Kaleb Mitchell; three brothers, Dealis W. Long, John Henry Long and Paul Richard Long; and a sister, Dolly Westmoreland. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Colfax, located at the corner of Hwy 421 and Sandy Ridge Rd., with Bishop D. Andrew Sweat officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm Friday, October 16, 2009 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.
