Carl Bovender, 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away at his residence on Saturday, October 22, 2022. He was born in Winston-Salem on April 10, 1941, to the late Charles A. Bovender, Sr., and Della Brinkley Bovender. He was the ninth of ten children. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, C.A. Bovender, Jr. and wife Lois, Chester Bovender and wives, Alice and Frances, Curt Bovender and wife Frances, Rev. Coy Bovender and wife Clois, Clyde Bovender; sister, Opal Shouse and husband Mims; brother-in-law, Glenn Spaugh; and stepmother, Louise Bovender. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra West Bovender; son, Scott Bovender (Mary Jo Bauer); sisters, Irene Cheek (Bobby) and Carol Spaugh; brother, Leroy Bovender (Shirley); sister-in-law, Opal Bovender; brother-in-law, David West (Melanie); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carl was raised in Southside Baptist Church. He graduated from Gray High School in 1959, where he was a football and track star. He attended Wake Forest College and graduated from Elon College in 1965. Carl worked for McLean Trucking Company for 25 years and Wachovia Bank for 20 years in technical support. Carl and Sandra were married June 25, 1966, in Asheville, NC. They were foster parents for Family Services for 10 years for 25 babies. Carl loved college football and the Atlanta Braves. He was a faithful and active member of Ardmore Baptist Church for as long as his health permitted. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 28, 2022, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens led by Rev. Tyler Tankersley, Dr. Gina M. Brock, and Dr. Paul Mullen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or a charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Klein and his staff for their compassionate care all these years and Trellis Supportive Care for their excellent care of Carl.
