Captain James E. Myrick

Captain James Egerton Myrick, United States Navy, Retired, was born 18 November 1924 and died 25 January 2012. He was the son of Eva Glasgow and Walter Blair Myrick. His beloved wife, Eleanor Hayes from Elkin, NC survives him. They married 18 June 1949. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Charlotte and husband Ron Vogler and their daughter Angela and son Walt; Blair Hayes Myrick and Nina Alice Myrick. A son, James Egerton Myrick Jr. predeceased and left grandchildren James Rand Myrick; Hayes and husband Mike Ells, great granddaughter Halle Marie and great grandson Benjamin Michael; and Blair Anne Myrick; a sister, Blair Myrick James, along with her 3 children and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hayes and her two daughters also survive. Captain Myrick was raised and graduated from High School in Littleton, NC. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy by Congressman John Kerr and graduated from the Academy in the Class of 1948. He also held a degree in Fine Arts from the College of Charleston as well as a Masters degree in Management from Webster University. He attended the United States Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA in a course of electrical engineering. He served on destroyers and minesweepers, was Operation Officer both division and squadron destroyer staffs. He served on a minesweeper for a year in Korean waters during that war. He and his family lived on both coasts including 2 years teaching at the Naval Academy, a year on Guam as Executive Officer of a Destroyer Escort; 2 years as Commanding Officer of a minesweeper and another 3 years as Commanding Officer of a destroyer. He served 2 years as Director Mines, Swimmer Weapons Systems and Explosive Disposable Ordnance in the NAVORDSYSCOM. He served 4 years in Madrid, Spain in the Joint United States Military Advisory and Assistance Group and Commanding Officer of The Fleet Mine Warfare Training Center in Charleston, SC for 2 years before retiring. In 1992 he and his wife moved to Pinehurst, NC for 11 years and then moved to Bermuda Village Retirement Community, Advance, NC in 2003 where they were near their daughters. He was a man of faith who always found comfort in a church home, wherever he lived. Love and commitment to family were Jim's greatest gifts. He lived his life to the fullest in a loving and compassionate manner, treating each person he encountered with kind respect. He never tired of learning, growing and giving. A celebration of his life with his family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Clemmons Food Pantry PO Box 871 Clemmons, NC 27012.
