Byron Calvin Craver, 84, of Winston-Salem, went to heaven on Friday, July 13, 2012, surrounded by his family, at Forsyth Medical Center. Byron was born on November 21, 1927 in Winston-Salem to Mickey Manuel and Zula Hinkle Craver. He has lived his life in Winston-Salem where he attended Gray High School. Byron joined the United States Navy in 1943. He began his career in the oil and gas industry by opening the Konnoak Texaco Service Station where he acted as owner and operator. He later began work for Leonard Oil Company, a family business, serving the majority of the subsequent years as Vice-President and Office Manager. Byron has been a longtime member of Central Terrace United Methodist Church. He has been a longtime member of Konnoak Hills Lions Club. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Essie Mae Hilton Craver; and two brothers, Carrol M. Craver, Sr. and Henry Foil Craver. He is survived by two daughters, Janet Craver Lane and husband Michael R. Lane of Winston-Salem, and Karen Craver Bruce of Wilmington; a special friend and nephew, Stephen M. Craver of Welcome; a granddaughter, Erika Lane Clark and husband Christopher M. Clark of Concord; two grandsons, Jimmy Bruce of Wichita, KS, and Morocco Bruce of Charlotte; a great grandson, Hayden Clark of Concord; and a special friend David Grubbs. A graveside service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Henry May officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Terrace United Methodist Church, 3 East Devonshire Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127 or Konnoak Hills Lions Club, 2681 Weymoth Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
