Bryce Monroe Paschal

Bryce Monroe Paschal passed away on the beautiful Sunday morning at 11:25 am Dec. 6, 2015. He was surrounded by family and loved ones at K.B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Bryce was born in the small farming community of Silk Hope in Chatham County, NC, to James Dave and Decie White Paschal. He was the 4th of 5 children. Bryce's growing-up years were the source of many of his stories, which he delighted in sharing with his family and friends. The family worked together on the cotton and tobacco farm. They raised hogs, chickens and turkeys. His Mother Decie sold eggs for extra spending money. Bryce trapped and cleaned rabbits and sold them in Siler City to earn money for the family, and for special purchases like his bicycle.

At age 18 Bryce enlisted in the US Army during WWII. He took his basic training at Camp Croft, SC with other young enlistees from Chatham County. Bryce was sent initially to Germany and served as an infantryman in the 9th armored Division. On one occasion Bryce was asleep in his tent in France when his brother Billy lifted the tent flap and surprised him. Bryce jumped with joy at seeing him after several years!

Bryce was wounded in Leipzig, Germany and hospitalized in France. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Medal of Freedom. Bryce was proud, but humble, to have served his country. He later served as State Senior Vice-Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

After the war Bryce and a buddy found their way to Winston-Salem in search of employment. In the process he found a beautiful woman, Virginia Mathews. They fell in love, married and raised two daughters (Pam and Robin) and one son (Mark). As a family they enjoyed many outdoor activities including gardening, camping, and fishing. Bryce was married to Virginia for 46 years before her death in 1993. Bryce retired from the US Post Office after 30 years of service.

In May 1994 Bryce married Bonnie Leffel, a friend from Konnoak Baptist Church. Bonnie had lost her spouse a few years previous. Bryce and Bonnie enjoyed 21 years together, doing what they loved most; working outdoors, gardening, and trips to Kure Beach. Bryce enjoyed smoking his pipe on the front porch of his home, where he would offer a friendly wave to passers-by.

Bryce is survived by his children Pamela Waddell of Lewisville, Robin Barnhill (Dr. Jarrett Jr.) of Hillsborough, Dr. Bryce Mark Paschal (Angie) of Charlottesville, VA, Stepson Robert Saylor (Tanya) of Walnut Cove; and grandchildren Katie, Larry, Matt (Jennifer), Emily, Bethany (Allen), Isaac, Leah, Malachi, Ashlee; Great-grandchild Caden. Bryce was a devoted family man and noted story-teller, who always felt empathy for the working man.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 12:00pm at Konnoak Baptist Church with Rev. John Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made Konnoak Baptist Church, 500 McLean Ave, Winston-Salem, NC, or to the DAV, P.O Box 14301, Cinn, OH 45250-0301.
