Brian Clark Smith of Durham, North Carolina, born August 21, 1972, in Forsyth County, North Carolina, died April 27, 2010. He was 37. Brian was the son of Elmer Clark Smith and Barbara Hurt. He attended Surry Community College and completed course work, achieving numerous honors, toward a doctorate in mathematics under a full scholarship at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He also found a passion for teaching as a professor while there at N.C. State. As a boy, Brian was active in speed skating, earning national recognition, and motocross sports. As an adult, he was active in local car clubs. He owned and modified several high performance cars and actively raced at tracks throughout North Carolina. Brian loved his family and friends dearly. He had a glorious sense of humor and a gift with words, both written and spoken. Brian brought peace and serenity by just being in a room. He was learning to ride horses and loved dogs. Brian gave life his all. Brian is survived by his father and mother; sister, Karen Hall (Derek); nieces, Shannon Wall (Ricky), Kayla Hall, Miranda Hall; a grand-nephew, Alex; his grandmother, Mary Hurt; and his soulmate in life, Karen Hahn. He will be sorely missed always and never forgotten. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem, N.C. for a memorial to honor Brian's life.
