On Thursday, May 19, 2022, we lost a true treasure. Bonnie Dowell Saylor Leffel Paschal, 82, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away at Forsyth Medical Center. Bonnie was born March 1, 1940, in Longtown, a small community in Yadkin County, North Carolina, to the late Roy Dowell and Lucy Sloop. Bonnie was the 2nd youngest in a family of 6 children. She spent 10 years at the Children’s Home in Winston, along with her siblings. She talked fondly about her time there. She graduated from Gray High School in 1958 and started working at Food Fair. While in high school, she met Jerry Ray Saylor. They soon married in 1961 and was blessed with 2 children. Unfortunately, her son, David, preceded her in death in 1969 due to complications of cystic fibrosis. Later on, Bonnie and Jerry divorced in 1975. Bonnie stayed in the grocery business working for Kroger as a meat clerk, where she retired. That is where she met Mac Leffel, a Gunnoe Sausage sales rep. They later married. Mac’s health was poor, and he passed away in the early 90’s. A faithful servant of the Lord, she was an active member of Konnoak Baptist Church for many years, where she met Bryce Paschal. They had very much in common, especially gardening a beautiful flower and vegetable garden. Her hobbies were photography, poetry, and rambling in the mountains. She was a true lover of nature.
Surviving family members include her sister, Brenda “Bo” Hutchens (John); son, Robert Saylor (Tanya); granddaughter, her Ashlee Boo; and her nieces, Stephanie, Beth, and Gayla.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 24, 2022, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at 10:00 AM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
