Bobby Poindexter

Mr. Bobby Lee Poindexter entered into the immediate presence of his Lord on March 25, 2018. He was born on March 20, 1927 to the late William S. and Maggie S. Poindexter. Mr. Poindexter was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church in Clemmons, NC.

He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 during WWII. He served with the 82nd and 58th units of the Seabees on Okinawa in 1945. He drove a motor grader mostly at night constructing landing fields for the large bombers. My Dad was fortunate that he never had to shoot his gun but he did have to hide under the grader during raids.

He retired from Western Electric following 35 years of service. He found out that retirement was not for him so he went to work for his son's company, Marven L. Poindexter, Inc. in Charlotte for 17 years as a plumber. During this time, Dad had all the grandchildren and Mom helping him build up sinks and shower heads in his workshop. Dad would tell everyone that he would retire in one more year, but he kept working so he finally retired from working at the age of 75.

He and his wife, Marie M. Poindexter attended Bethesda Moravian Church where they were married on April 10, 1948 and he served as an usher and assistant Sunday School superintendent. They then attended Mount Carmel Methodist Church where he worked with the scout troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster in 1966. They joined Clemmons Moravian Church when they and their family moved to the Clemmons area after his Dad's passing. Bob served as an usher and on the Board of Elders. He also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 736, sponsored by the Clemmons Civic Club.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman, loved raising a garden that could feed an army, and being on his tractor. He especially loved bush hogging his fields and mowing his yard. He kept all of them neat and clean. Dad and Mom did some traveling but they mainly loved being in their home and enjoying their family and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 7 sisters and their husbands, Mamie Sales (Bernie), Edith Walker (Kemp), Ethel Brewer (June), Violet Rothrock (Carl), Evelyn Boles (Glenn), Betty Miller (L.F.), and Shirley Watkins (Laddie) and one brother, Bill Poindexter. His loving wife of 63 years preceded him in death in September of 2011, Marie M. Poindexter. He was also preceded in death by both of his sons, Marven L. Poindexter and Gary D. Poindexter (wife Candy). Also preceding him was his son-in-law, Earl W. Clopton and grandson, Adam Poindexter, Sr.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Martha Carole Clopton of Lewisville; grandsons, Wayne Hege (Martha) of Winston-Salem, Chris Hege (Christine) of Lewisville, and Matt Poindexter (Kara) of Charlotte; granddaughters, Michelle Poindexter of Asheville and her mother Susan Spencer of Charlotte and Lisa Leath (Mark) of Thomasville; sister-in-law, Louise Poindexter of Clemmons; 13 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held Thursday, March 29, 2018 at 2 PM at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Christopher C. Thore and Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Interment with military honors will follow the service in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 28, 2018 from 5 - 8 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to Clemmons Moravian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 730, Clemmons, NC 27012 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

My father had a great sense of humor and wrote most of his obituary for me, his daughter, to find after his passing. He added the following: "Bury me with my feet up and a hole in the casket for my nose so it will not be smashed with the lid closed!" Dad, you got me one more time and I cannot get you back. Love, Carole
