Bobby Claud Boyles, Sr.

Mr. Bobby Claud Boyles, Sr., 85, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at his home following an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving children. He was born November 29, 1931 in Stokes County to the late Claud Alexander and Ruth Elizabeth Linville Boyles. Bob was a graduate of Walnut Cove High School, where he played on the first school football team in Stokes County with his cousin and lifetime best friend, the late Don Boyles. He attended Draughn Business College in Richmond, VA before enlisting in the United States Navy. Bob proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Rendova from 1951 to 1955. On May 23, 1951, he married Jean and lived in San Diego, CA for a short time. After serving in the military, Bob and Jean returned to Stokes County to settle in Walnut Cove and begin their family. He retired from AT&T, formerly Western Electric, after 36 years of service. Bob was a member of Stokesburg United Methodist Church and Walnut Cove Masonic Lodge #629. He also served as a Walnut Cove Town Councilman from 1983 to 1985. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and sports, including: football, baseball, and golf. He found great pleasure in attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events as long as his health allowed. In addition to his parents, Mr. Boyles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Betty Jean Stoltz Boyles, who passed May 10, 2012; and by his sister, Rose Boyles Southern. He is survived by three adoring children: Bobby C. Boyles, Jr. of Walnut Cove, Martha White (Keith) of Rural Hall, and Karen Borgen (Shawn) of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren: Wesley Boyles (Hope), Devin Booze (Sarah), Katelyn James, Austin Boyles, Ashley Boyce (Leroy), and Nicholas Borgen; two great-grandchildren; and his canine companions, Zandra and Cash. Bob was a loving family man. He stated he found great contentment in his life through his faith in God, honor of country, and love of family. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Walnut Cove Cemetery with Rev. Jason Harvey officiating. Military Rites will be provided by American Legion Post 290 of King. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 14, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Cove Cemetery or Shriners Hospital for Children. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Stokes Team of Hospice & Palliative Care and Megan Alexander, MD and staff of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
