Blanche Oakes Mitchell

Mrs. Blanche Oakes Mitchell, 96, departed this life on August 7, 2011 at Salem Terrace Assisted Living Home in Winston Salem, NC. She lived in Rural Hall after moving from the Piney Grove Community where she lived for many years. Blanche was born on June 28, 1915 in Rural Hall, NC to Zebulon and Cora Speas Oakes. She was married to the late Vecue K. Mitchell for 56 years. She was a faithful member of the North Ridge Baptist Church until her health declined. Ms. Mitchell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Robert, Clifton, John and Van Pal Oakes: and three sisters, Martha Tyler, Cora Nelline Mitchell and Sophie Leak. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Gwendolyn Leonard, Emily (Coleman) Rader, Cody Phillips, Betty Joan Jiles, Ellen (William) Hairston and Mary Joyner: sons, Ray Mitchell, Phillip (Loretta) Mitchell, Jerry (Catherine) Mitchell, Vecue Mitchell and Christopher (Claire) Kimbrough; sister, Lillie Phifer; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved her dearly. Funeral Service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Bill Marr at 1:00 pm Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall, NC. Burial will follow the service at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The Family will receive friends from 12 noon to 12:30 pm Thursday at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103 or North Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 667, Rural Hall, NC 27045. The Family would like to thank the Staff at Salem Terrace Assisted Living Home for their care and kindness that they showed over the past 14 years.
