Billy Edgar Schenck

SCHENCK
Billy Schenck of Arcadia, NC, passed away peacefully at Alston Brook Nursing Home after the onset of Parkinsons six years ago. Mr. Schenck played football at N. Mahaska H.S.; served in the Army Air Corps and Air Transport Command during WWII; decorated for service in the European Theater, North African Campaign and Allied invasion of Europe during D-Day Campaign; aircraft mechanic by trade and was employed by Capital and United Airlines after the war. A staunch trade unionist, he worked for Int. Assoc. of Machinists and Aerospace workers as a business rep. and was instrumental in organizing mechanics and related at Piedmont Airlines. A man of principle, he spent his life helping the working man to create a better living for himself. He was one of the country's preeminent authorities on The Railway Labor Act. Among other things, he was chief judge at his voting precinct; a baseball coach; an ardent fan of bluegrass music; a lover of thoroughbred and harness racing and supporter of the Braves and Cubs. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, and daughter Susan Terry. Surviving are his sons Patrick and Lee; grandchildren Jerry, Kevin, Brian, Justin, Steven and Lauren; and several great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 Noon Friday, May 16, 2014 in Parklawn Memorial Park with the family officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Davidson County. A true ""Working Man's Hero"" he conferred with presidents but consulted with custodians; stood shoulder to shoulder with West Virginia coal miners, Minnesota packing house workers, Miami aircraft mechanics; marched the picket lines through ice and snow; and fought the ""good fight"". He was an honest man. Woody Guthrie would be proud. ""I've been doin some hard travelin', I thought you know'd"". Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements)
