Beulah Marie Pope Clatfelter, 99, finished her earthly journey and entered eternal rest with her Lord Jesus on June 6, 2024.
Beulah was born on August 12, 1924 at 7:30 AM to Lawrence H. Pope and Elsie Bates Pope in Haxtun, Colorado. Early in her childhood her family moved to New Plymouth, Idaho were her parents purchased a small farm. Her growing up years on the family farm and the Great Depression formed her character at an early age. The oldest of three girls, she learned the discipline of responsibility and hard work that characterized her practice and values her entire life. She excelled in school, graduating high school in the early summer 1941 before her 17th birthday. She went on to Business College in Boise to gain skill in the clerical field.
Beulah is highly respected as the last of her family to be a member of “The Greatest Generation.” In October 1943 she married 2nd Lieutenant Kenneth A. Clatfelter in Pocatello, Idaho. She was 19. Beulah had met Clatfelter on the school bus in New Plymouth when he had moved to town to live with his sister. Clatfelter served in the Army Air Corps, entering the European Theater in January 1944 with the renowned 8th Air Force. As a Navigator for a B-24 Liberator crew, this elite organization played a vital role in neutralizing the Third Reich.
As with so many of that post-war era, she supported her husband while he earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Idaho while they also started their family. She proudly “earned” her PhT – “Putting Hubby Through.” Her sons, Richard and Thomas were born in those college years.
Upon graduation, her husband began his career working in corporate America. Beulah, as was typical of her generation, supported her husband in his career, raised her sons and managed her household. After a short career with A T & T, she devoted her full time energy to this end. Her husband’s career with Campbell Soup Company took her to California, New Jersey and finally retirement in Arkansas.
In mid-life, Beulah experienced a renewal of her childhood faith and began to seek God in a more intense way through the Christian Scriptures. As she grew in her faith and understanding of the good news of Jesus, she began to invest in helping others discover what she herself was learning. Teaching Bible studies, leading Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School became a natural practice of her spiritual growth. She maintained a steadfast trust in Jesus Christ and the hope of eternal life in Him until death.
Beulah is survived by her loving son, Richard Clatfelter; her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Clatfelter; her sisters, Shirley Ware and Donna Gilmore; seven grandchildren, Matthew Clatfelter (Andrea), Katherine Young (Ray), Amy Robichaux (Larry), Elizabeth Limon (Mathew), Paul Clatfelter, Caroline Bost (Andrew) and Kathleen Clatfelter; eleven great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Faber, Krynn and Kendrick Clatfelter, Isabelle Schott (Bryce), Joshua and Tristan Young, Bradford, Emmilyn, Ruby and Lakely Bost, Kayley Limon; and one great-great granddaughter, Lilica Van Zandt.
Beulah was preceaded in death by her father, Lawrence (Bill) Pope; her mother, Elsie Pope; her husband, Kenneth Clatfelter, her son, Thomas Clatfelter; and her daughter-in-law, Doris Clatfelter.
