SPENCER - WALKERTOWN Betty Brown Spencer went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 6th. She was born in Wilkes County on February 21, 1936 to Roy and Beulah Brown. She was a graduate of Ronda High School, after which she married Ralph Curtis Spencer of Benham, NC. They moved to Winston-Salem in 1956 where Betty worked for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. She left Reynolds a few years later to stay at home and raise her four children. She was a member of Marshall Baptist Church in Winston-Salem where she also worked as the church secretary for 15 years until she joined her husband in retirement. They traveled the US and the world, visiting the Holy Lands in Israel, Greece, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and most of the US. In July 2010 she was diagnosed with ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) which she fought bravely and was supported by her constant caregiver and husband, Ralph. They celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary on July 14th, 2011. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Robin Spencer Tolbert; her parents and three brothers. She is survived by her husband, Ralph, of the home; two daughters, Karen Spencer Rock and husband, Philip of King, NC; Patricia Spencer Dudley and husband, Donald of Loganville, GA; son, Robert Spencer and wife, Trish of Kernersville, NC; six grandchildren, April (Steven) Roberson of King, Brad (Jennifer) Rock of Trinity, Sara (Zach) Gillespie of Monroe, GA, Anna (Clay) Parker of Monroe, GA, Ryan Spencer and Megan Spencer of Kernersville; and four great-grandchildren, Lanie Roberson, Carson Roberson, Liam Gillespie and Gage Parker; and also, two brothers, Donald and Douglas Brown. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Marshall Baptist Church, 5739 Old Rural Hall Road, Winston-Salem, NC on Friday, December 9th at 6:00 p.m with the Rev. Richard Dodson and the Rev. John Holmes officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. following the service. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, December 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Marshall Baptist Church.
