Mrs. Betty Boaz Smith died peacefully on November 11, 2014 after a brief illness, on her own terms just as she lived her 94 years of life. She was born January 15, 1920 in Surry County to Nonnie Ethel Fulk and Roscoe Conklin âR.C.' Boaz. She married her late husband, Oscar Wilbur Smith, Sr. in 1938. Mrs. Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Oscar Wilbur Smith, Jr.; and her brother, Raymond Jefferson Boaz, Sr. Surviving are two daughters, Sue Smith Colmant and Elizabeth Smith Tilley and husband, Jerry, both of Pilot Mountain; three grandchildren, Mark Patrick Smith and wife, Jennifer of Candler, NC, Joshua Smith Tilley and wife, Karrie of Chapel Hill, NC, and Molly Tilley White and husband, H.R. of Knoxville, TN; three great grandchildren, Ivan Potter-Smith of Candler, NC, Madison Blake and McKenzie Kate Tilley of Chapel Hill, NC; one sister, Sue Boaz Myers of Hartsville, VA.
Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Pilot Mountain High School where she was awarded Valedictorian and furthered her education at Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC. She was an avid reader, bridge player, and ACC basketball fan. She served her church in many capacities; including a longtime Sunday school teacher for adults and children. She was a member of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron with her husband as Worthy Patron. She was recently presented her 75 year Eastern Star pin. Mrs. Smith spent summers with her family at Lake Junaluska, NC, serving and worshiping within the Methodist Assembly.
The family would like to thank special angels God put into her life that cared, loved and supported her: Ashley Serena, Kim Jessup, Jeannie Ferguson, Kay Cooke and Pat Farris. Mrs. Smith had special friends, Bobby and Peggy Phillips, who made it possible for her to continue to spend summers at Lake Junaluska in recent years. Her daughters would like to extend a ""thank you"" to a special cousin, Forrest Ray Boaz, Sr., for all the guidance and support provided to Mrs. Smith in the last twenty years of her life.
Services will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, November 15 at First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain with Rev. Tom Hunter and Rev. R. Sidney Lanier officiating. Mrs. Smith will be taken to the church at 12:00 noon before the service. The family will receive friends after the service in the Family Life Center at the Church with a private family graveside committal service following. The family is being served by Hayworth Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church at 210 East Marion Street, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041 or to Longs Chapel United Methodist Church at 145 Old Clyde Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.
