Betty Ila Blackburn Shields

Betty Ila Blackburn Shields of Winston-Salem, died at The Oaks at Forsyth where she had been a resident for a year. She was born in Forsyth County to William Landers Blackburn and Margaret Cockerham Blackburn on August 21, 1920. Mrs. Shields was of the baptist faith and a member of Freeman Street Baptist Church at the time of her death. Prior, she had been a member of Northpoint Baptist Church and Goldfloss Baptist Church where she was church secretary for many years. She loved to sing in the choir where she enjoyed praising and worshiping her Lord. Her love of God and her family were her greatest strengths. Her priorities were raising her children and helping with the care of her grandchildren. Later in life, she went to work for K&W Cafeteria and retired from Carolon Inc. in 1998. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Geneva Martin, Vallie Ashley, Callie Tucker, Bertha Waller, Beulah Murphy, and Colleen Vanderveer. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Carl H. Shields; daughter, Peggy Ann McLean and husband Ted; son, Garland Ray Shields and wife Debbi; grandchildren, Michael McLean (Diane) of Hillsboro, Oregon, Scott McLean (Shelly) of Lexington, and Courtney Shields of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jake McLean and Reynolds Bailey. A funeral service will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Skip Furrow officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A private graveside service will be held on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at The Oaks at Forsyth for their love and excellent care given to Mrs. Shields during her stay.
