Mrs. Betty Cartner Michael, 78, of Savannah, GA passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC following several months of declining health. Born August 28, 1930 in Iredell County, she was the daughter of the late William Ray Cartner Sr. and Robert Nell Jones. A graduate of Harmony High School, she continued her education at Draughn's Business School while employed at Wachovia Bank. Betty was a charter member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and church secretary. Betty lived her life with grace and dignity, never saying an unkind word of anyone. She was a unique individual who never met a stranger and her goal in life was to try to make everyone else happy. An avid gardener, Betty spent many hours working in her yard and flowerbeds while watching the many birds that were attracted to her feeders. Betty will be remembered fondly as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who loved her family dearly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, W. Ray Cartner Jr. and Robert E. Cartner. Surviving is her husband, Don; a daughter, Sharon Cannady and husband Stevie of Pooler, GA; two granddaughters, Christen and Taylor Cannady; two brothers, Richard Cartner and wife Marsha and Perry Cartner, all of Harmony, NC; four sisters, Nellie EltonWright of Advance, NC, Claire E.Foster and husband James of Hainesport, NJ, Tommye Campbell and husband Henry of Winston-Salem, NC and Bobbie Jo Sees and husband John of Advance, NC; three sisters-in-law, Carol Cartner of Harmony, NC, Gay Cartner of Statesville and June Michael of Winston-Salem and a brother-in-law, Bruce Michael and wife Mona of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Dr. William Hoyle officiating. Burial will follow at Clarksbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Harmony, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
