Betty Lou McGee Joyce

Mrs. Betty Lou McGee Joyce, 89, of Winston-Salem and Pfafftown passed away peacefully at Forsyth Memorial Hospital March 14, 2011. She was born May 3, 1922, in Cherokee, Iowa to Edwin Adelbert and Blanche Effie McGee. She met and married Nelson Reed Joyce in Wisconsin. During their 65 years of marriage they resided in the States of Wisconsin, Georgia, California and retired in North Carolina. Of this union were two children, son Jon Reed and daughter Judith Ann. Mrs. Joyce was a retired registered nurse holding reciprocity in the States of Wisconsin, California, Iowa and North Carolina. During her career, one of her fulfillments was caring for high risk newborns in the neonatal unit. She enjoyed many family camping trips to such locations as Yellowstone, Mammoth Lakes, Tetons, Bishop Creek, Lake Tahoe and Fairy Stone Park. After retirement, she enjoyed working in her garden. She was a member of the North Carolina Extension & Community Association with the Forsyth County division. She also enjoyed crocheting blankets and caps for babies in the hospital, scenic short trips and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed just about everything and if she didn't enjoy it, she tried to. Mrs. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, stepmother Wilma McGee, son Jon Reed Joyce, and sisters Barbara Halstenberg and Marcia Crooks. Survivors include her daughter, Judy Dahl of Pfafftown; one granddaughter, Jennifer Craven and husband, James of Enid, Oklahoma; two grandsons, Joey Dahl and wife, Anna of Monroe, NC and Jeff Joyce and wife, Tania of Winston-Salem; seven great grandsons, Cameron, Ty, Jarod, of Monroe and James, Austin, Jonathan, Logan and one great granddaughter Dallas all of Enid, Oklahoma. Also surviving are brother Jim McGee and wife Marian of Buena Park, California and sister Delores Grauer of Marcus, Iowa; five sister-in-laws Doris, Mabel, Betty, Tiney and Belvie, two brothers-in-law Ernest and William all of Bassett, VA. and sister-in-law Nancy and husband Anthony of Wadsworth, Ohio, and several nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 to 1:45 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or The Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27113. We the family of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, wife, and friend would like to give our deepest thanks to Dr. Eugene Paschold and all the staff on the 9th Floor Forsyth Cancer Center at Forsyth Memorial Hospital for the most wonderful compassionate loving care that was given to our loved one during her journey as well as the love and care they have provided to the family.
