Betty Jean Styers Hunter

Mrs. Betty Styers Hunter passed away at 7:22am, June 3, 2023 after a brief illness. She was the 11th child of 13 born to Kerner Cicero and Lillian Martha Walker Styers on July 10, 1931, near Walkertown, in Forsyth County North Carolina.  A member of a large farming family whose heritage was that of the Moravians, German settlers who first came to the Carolinas on her paternal side and the Scots-Irish who came down the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania in the 18th century on her maternal side. Shortly after graduating from Mineral Springs High School in Winston-Salem, Betty, along with her best friend, moved to Austin Texas where she worked and attended night classes at Stephen F. Austin University, focusing on the clerical and civil service fields. In Austin she met James Franklin Hunter, a native Charlottean, who was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base. Eventually the couple moved back to North Carolina in 1958, marrying in York South Carolina. Their union produced one son, Conrad James Hunter who was born May 4, 1960. Although she lived the rest of her life in Charlotte North Carolina, she always had fond memories of time in Texas. During her lifetime Betty worked as a secretary and executive assistant for various companies including Roll Form Products and Ortho Pharmaceutical before settling on a career with BellSouth Telecommunications from which she retired in 1997. One of the great joys of her later life was helping to care for and raise her two grandchildren. She is survived by her only son, Conrad James Hunter and wife Mina and two grandchildren, Lillian Tara Hunter of Boston MA and Wolfgang Nicholas Hunter of New York City. There will be a small graveside service at Gardens of Memories in Walkertown on Saturday June 10 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte 7845 Little Ave, Charlotte, NC 28226.
