Betty Freeman Hughes

WALKERTOWN-Betty Freeman Hughes, 73, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 31, 1935 in Forsyth Co. to the late Arthur Stanley and Maggie Goode Freeman. Mrs. Hughes was a charter member of White Road Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hughes, Sr.; a great-grandson, Gabriel Alan Shelton; two sisters, Mae Sue Freeman and Pauline Hicks. Surviving are a daughter, Kathy S. Taylor and husband Carl of Kernersville; two sons, Mike Shelton and wife Karen of Walnut Cove, Tony Shelton and wife Carla of Kernersville; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; father of the children, Marion Shelton, three step-children, Jack Hughes, Jr., Phyllis Odle both of Virginia, and Larry Hughes of Stokesdale; two sisters, Mary Louise Stanley of Kernersville, Carol Hicks of Walkertown; one brother, Roy Freeman of Winston Salem; and a life long friend, Rita Creed of Walnut Cove. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 2, 2009 in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with the Rev. Carl Taylor and the Rev. Mike Gaither officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm Friday, May 1, 2009 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel and at other times at the home of her daughter, Kathy, 1978 Ponderosa Dr. Kernersville.
