Betty Poteat Garwood, 100 of Raleigh, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2022. She was born November 29, 1921 in Morganton, NC to Brittain Harrison Poteat and Louisa Hoyle Poteat. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Vestal Garwood and her son Dan H. Garwood. She was a graduate of Morganton High School and later Forsyth Tech in Winston-Salem where she earned her teachers certificate and later taught at Rosemont’s Elementary School. She met her husband while he was in the Civil Conservation Corp (CCC) near her home in Morganton. They were married in 1940. In 1942 World War II took them to Baltimore where Ernest (Ernie) worked in the shipyards. After the war, they moved to Winston-Salem where they made their home. They joined Rosemont Baptist Church where Betty was very active in several capacities and remained a member there after moving to Raleigh. She is survived by her two daughters, Ann G. Burton (William), Judy G. Pope (Terry) and four grandchildren, Teresa Drian, Todd Pope, Kellie Fessler and Christy Cleveland and ten great grandchildren A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Mark Reed officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
