Betty Norwood East

Mrs. Betty Norwood East, 94, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully Saturday, June 28, 2014. She was born August 28, 1919 to Evan Wilkins and Emma Wilson Norwood. Betty spent her early years in China as the daughter of missionary parents. She was a graduate of Westhampton College and majored in German which became useful in her job during WWII as she decoded spy notes. Mac and Betty did extensive traveling and met many good friends along the way. She had many hobbies but her passion for art and painting gave her great pleasure. By saying Betty was an avid reader is an understatement. She read thousands of books which made her very well-read. However, what she did best, she listened.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 45 years, Malcolm East. She is survived by her daughter, Prakhara Allison East Harter; son, Bill (Cindy) East; grandchildren, Caroline (Joey) Dickenson and Jim East; great grandchildren, Ellie, Will and Grant Dickenson; brother, George (Betty) Norwood; sister, Louise Thomas; and sister-in-law, Audrey Norwood. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem with Dr. David Hughes officiating. The family would like to thank Community Hospice of Statesville, Forsyth Hospice and Forest Heights Senior Community for their excellent care and support. And a special thanks to Brenda Hairston.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Community Hospice of Statesville and Hospice and Palliative CareCenter. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
