Betty Cook

Betty Ruth Chitty Cook, 86, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018. She was born on January 22, 1932 to Rowan Elvin and Peny Elizabeth (Bessie) Chitty and made the Winston-Salem area her home for her entire life. Betty married Fred Austin Cook of Clemmons, NC on August 6th, 1951. While Fred was serving in the US Army, Betty worked for the Department of Education of the State of South Carolina before returning to Winston-Salem to work for Western Electric. They had two children together; son David Fred Cook and daughter Janet Ellen Cook Craver. Betty was a lifelong member of the Moravian Church, being raised at Advent Moravian Church and attending Hope Moravian Church for most of her adult life. She was a loyal member of the Women's Fellowship, where she served faithfully as a circle leader and bible study chairman. She also served on the church board on numerous occassions. Betty loved her family, church family, and her innumerable friends. She enjoyed going on many vacations with her family, from Pine Knoll Shores to St. Maartin to Disney World to Hawaii and Alaska. She loved to read, do word puzzles, spend time with her grandchildren, and play dominoes. She was a kind and gentle soul who always stayed positive and made sure others felt loved and cared for. Betty loved life and she loved her God. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; brother, Lawrence; and son, David. Surviving are her sister, Mary Chitty Willard; daughter, Janet Cook Craver and husband Bradd; grandsons, Austin and Andrew, and her beloved cat, Tiger 2. The funeral service will be at 5:00 pm, Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Hope Moravian Church with Reverend David Merritt and Reverend Judy Knopf officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service on the same day in the church fellowship hall from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hope Moravian Church (2759 Hope Church Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27127).
