Betty Winfrey Childress

Mrs. Betty Sue Winfrey Childress passed away on October 10, 2014. She was the daughter of the late J.R. (Rob) Winfrey and Beulah Mae Danner Winfrey. She is survived by her husband of 48 years Richard G. Childress and their son, Derek G. Childress of Richmond, VA and her beloved dog, Brianna. She retired from Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan Association now Piedmont Federal Savings Bank as a Loan Officer and Vice President. She was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. She was also a member of The Muddy River Art Association, her passion was her acrylic painting and she attributed her ability to paint to her first teacher, Daphne Chipman who taught her many avenues of her art. Later she studied under Cara Merritt who also attributed to her continuing education in art. She is also survived by a brother, James R. (Jim) Winfrey and wife Janis; and a sister, Beverly W. Powell and husband, Michael. Nephews, Jay R. Winfrey. Richard L. Powell, and Michael Powell and wife Pat of Atlanta, GA, Niece, Penny W. Shermer and husband Mark; two great-nephews, Jacob Shermer and Nicholas Powell. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Monday, October 13, 2014 at Maple Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bev Coppley and the Rev. Billy Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:30pm on Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
