Betty Fulp Brooks' earthly journey ended Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Forsyth Medical Center while surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was born August 27, 1929 in Forsyth County to the late Samuel Otto and Veola Turner Fulp. The youngest of eight children, she lived her entire life in Winston-Salem. She was a retired employee of Western Electric. She was an active member of First Christian Church of Winston-Salem. She enjoyed playing bridge, bowling and especially tennis which was her forte. More recently she enjoyed scrapbooking, stamping, and spending time with her grandchildren. In later years her yard became her private nature sanctuary. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Pleasant Asbury ""P.A."" Brooks, Jr.; a daughter, Cathy (Mark) Toomey of Winston-Salem; two sons, Wesley (Debbie) Brooks of Winston-Salem, Barry Brooks of Kernersville; a brother, Vestal Fulp (Ruth) of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Fulp of Boone; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Elizabeth, Alia and Emily Brooks and Travis Toomey, and her loyal Boston Terrier companion, Maggie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her three sisters, Virginia Reed, Minerva Shutt, and Edna Pike, and three brothers, Wilson, Wallace, and Bill Fulp, as well as a daughter-in-law, Sandi Smith Brooks. A celebration of her life will take place at 1:00 pm, Friday, January 8, 2010 at First Christian Church on Country Club Rd. in Winston-Salem with Dr. Mike Simpson officiating. The burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
