Betty Nifong Bowman went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. She was born March 25, 1927, to the late Leila and Clete Nifong. She had a 2-year-old sister, Cleo. After her mother’s passing when she was six months old, she became the daughter of Uncle Jamie and Aunt Ila Nifong and has siblings Webb, Frank, and Katheryn. They raised her and loved her as their own and she was very close to her baby sister, Katheryn. She married Thurman Mayberry and they had a daughter, Anita. She later married Bill Bowman and they had a son, Tavis “TAB”. Her husband, Bill, passed away in 1993.
She worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for many years and later she worked in a school cafeteria in Forsyth County where she enjoyed cooking and serving lunch for elementary age children.
She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed her Sunday School class at Gospel Light Baptist Church. For several years, as her health allowed, she joined her group of lady friends at the Y for water exercises and brunch afterwards.
Her true passion was working in her yard and caring for her many flower gardens. She spent hours in her yard everyday and loved for others to come see her flowers. She kept the tradition of beautiful Christmas decorating she had shared with Bill for as long as she was able.
Surviving her with loving memories are her son, Tavis Bowman; a daughter, Anita Briggs (husband, Ray). Also surviving are her grandsons, Kevin Briggs, Stephen Briggs (wife, Christina), five great-grandchildren Katrina, Sable, Emma, Sabrina, and Ethan; as well as her family dog, Little Bit.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Gardens of Memory-Walkertown with Pastor James Gunter officiating. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
