WINSTON SALEM – Bettie Lou Phelps Swett, 94, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.  Bettie was born on April 25, 1929, in Forsyth County to Ben and Lois Timmons Phelps. Bettie was employed at Food Fair grocery in Winston-Salem for more than 30 years. She enjoyed her church, baking, sports, and serving others. Bettie, and others, started the Forever Young senior group at Griffith Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for many years. Bettie also had a special heart for her granddogs, Kate and Bodie. 

In addition to her parents, Bettie was preceded in death by her husband, L.V. Swett; sisters, Beulah, Lucille, Ruth, and Jo; and brothers, Clint, Cyril, Allen, L.L. (Curly) and Bill. 

Surviving are her daughter, Yvonne Coffey (husband Joey); her grandson, Kevin Leonard (girlfriend, Jennifer Miller); brother-in-law, David Sweat (wife, Elsie); nephews, Ben, Mike, Gary, and Steve; special niece, Sylvia Lackey; special friends, June Tickle, Shirley Atwood, Wiley Tuttle and Norman Frye; and many other loving friends and family. 

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Tony Brown and Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, at Parklawn Memorial Park. 

The family thanks Davidson County Emergency Services, Bayada Home Care, Trellis Home Care, and Trellis Hospice Home for the exceptional care provided to Bettie in her final weeks. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, 794 Sedge Garden Road, Kernersville, NC 27284 or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
