Bert Edison Hollifield died peacefully at home the night of March 4, 2022. He was born on June 16, 1932, to Claude Howell Hollifield and Glen Beecher Hollifield in Bostic, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife Hilda Hale Hollifield.  Also preceding him in death were his brothers and sisters: Eleanor Martin, Louise Keeter, Roger Hollifield, Lillian Hollifield, Richard Linwood Hollifield, and Nicholas Hollifield. He is survived by his 3 children: Emily Hollifield (Gary), Kirk Hollifield (Helen), and Karyn Pugh (Lloyd); his 4 grandchildren: Noel (Hannah), Evelyn, Lindsey, and Leah; his 2 great-grandchildren; and his sisters Marguerite Barnes and Norma McEachern. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1954 with a B.S. in Education and joined the Army from July 1954 to May 1956.  He was stationed in Korea and returned to obtain a Master of Education from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1957.  He met his wife Hilda Hale while in graduate school at Chapel Hill.  He began teaching high school in Roanoke Rapids, NC and married Hilda Hale of Dallas, Texas on August 1, 1962.  The family moved to Winston-Salem in 1968 where he taught Biology and Anatomy at North Forsyth, Paisley, and Reynolds High Schools, retiring from his teaching career after more than 30 years. His hobbies included bird watching, gardening, and RC airplanes.  He enjoyed travel and went on nature trips to Panama and Galapagos, and leisure travel to England and Germany.  He loved learning and read extensively throughout his entire life. He was an active member of UNC-Chapel Hill General Alumni Association and a supporter of many charities.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers Bert would be pleased with any donations to your favorite cause.
