Bernice McCurdy Johnson

Bernice Eileen McCurdy Johnson, 81, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 3, 2025. She was born on December 23, 1943, to the late Clarence “Bud” McCurdy and Mary Bordell McCurdy. Bernice was a pioneer for the modern woman. In her small town, she was recognized for her achievements of attending college at Piedmont Bible College, where she studied Christian Education. While studying, she met the love of her life, the late Rev. Roscoe Johnson, whom she went on to spend 44 years with, and was proud to be a supportive preacher’s wife. After meeting Roscoe, she settled down in her lifelong career in finance. Bernice was a natural numbers girl and climbed her way up the ladder to eventually become Vice President of a bank and assisted in opening two banks. Most importantly, Bernice was a servant of God. She spent numerous hours at church, and found joy in playing the piano, singing gospel songs, and helping any way she could in the church ministry. Bernice touched the lives of many with her services to the community and spent time doing missionary work in Romania to help those in need. She spent time as a Christian School teacher, and taught her students, as well as her daughters, the importance of being able to do anything that you put your mind to. She will be missed immensely by those who knew and loved her. 

In addition to her parents, Bernice is preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. Roscoe Johnson, as well as a sister, Goldie Jones. 

Surviving are her daughters, Natalie Bell and Michelle Hooker; sisters, Carol Peters and Delores Gindlesperger; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Smith Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Chuck Peters and Rev. Bruce Freeman officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church, from 10:00 AM- 10:45 AM. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smith Grove Baptist Church Building Fund at P.O. Box 57, Colfax, NC, 27235.
