Bernard F. Schreiner Jr., M.D. passed away September 24, 2009 in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born February 18, 1927 to Bernard Schreiner, M.D. And Clara Witteman of Buffalo, NY. After serving in the Navy, in 1945 he earned his college degree with honors at the University of Buffalo then went on to medical school at the University of Rochester, NY , graduating in 1948. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine from 1952 to 1954 followed by additional years of training in Rochester in cardiology, arthritis, and metabolic diseases from 1954 to 1956. From 1956 to 1958 he continued his education as a research fellow in cardiology at the University of Rochester then undertook two more years of training in pulmonary physiology at Dartmouth Medical Center before he returned to the University of Rochester as an Assistant Professor of Cardiology in 1961. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Cardiology in 1965 and was a recipient of a United States Public Health Service Research Career Development award before achieving the status of Professor of Cardiology in 1970. He retired in 1989. As a physician, Dr. Schreiner touched and improved the lives of hundreds of people, from his patients suffering from heart illnesses, to the countless doctors in training he instructed to his collaborative research with colleagues to investigate the causes and remedies for cardiopulmonary diseases. His family remembers and cherishes him as a loving husband to Martha his wife of 56 years, and a devoted father and role model to his three children David, Jean, and Mary Joan. Despite his many achievements he remained a humble man who treasured time with his family, and nurtured his love of learning by reading extensively outside the field of medicine. The American Civil War was his major intellectual passion and he made multiple pilgrimages to Civil War Battlefields in order to better understand the great sacrifices made by our ancestors. Surviving family members are his wife Martha, his son David and his wife Johanna Jorizzo and their children Daniel and Elena, his daughter Jean and her husband Nick and his son Aaron, and his daughter Mary Joan and her husband Matthew and his children Michael and Emily. Dr. Schreiner's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers at Wake Forest/Baptist Hospital and Brookridge Nursing Facility for their professional and empathic care during the last months of his life.
