Barry Lee Thornton, Sr.

Barry Lee Thornton,Sr., 73 of Walkertown, NC went home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 21, 2014. He was born to the late Okey and Nellie Thompson Thornton on May 27, 1940 in Matoaka, WV. He married Shirley Ann Harmon Thornton in 1960 and they lived in Spanishburg, WV before relocating to Walkertown, NC in 1989. Barry was an electrician for Consolidated Coal Company until retiring in 1988. His remaining working years were spent at Martin Merrietta and Carolina Hydraulics in NC. He was a proud active member of the United Mine Workers. Barry enjoyed being outdoors, working in his garden, and hunting. Barry was also a proud member of Believer's Baptist Church, serving as a choir member and prayer warrior. He truly loved spending time with his church family. Barry was survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley Ann Harmon Thornton; two sons Barry Thornton, Jr. and wife Lisa of Walkertown, Jeff Thornton of Walkertown; three grandsons Justin Thornton and wife Ashlea of Belews Creek, Jared Thornton of Walkertown, Jason Thornton of Ft. Riley, Kansas; five great grandchildren Madison, Mackenzie, Isaiah, Savanna, Ashlyn; two sisters Rena Tomblin of Southport, Oh, Greta McPherson of Calloway, Va; many nieces and nephews,and a long time friend Jimmy Hancock of WV. He was precided in death by two brothers Ronald Thornton, Eddie ""Buddy"" Thornton and one sister Roberta Adkins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with friend and Pastor Don McGee officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville, NC. The family will receive visitors on Monday from 6:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
