Barbara Brown Kendrick, 88, passed away Wednesday April 5, 2017 at Forest Heights Senior Living Community in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born July 14, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Arline Gangwisch Brown and George Farquhar Brown. Barbara graduated from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina with a degree in English. She taught English in the Mecklenburg County, NC schools for a short time, and then married Leon Ryan Kendrick, Jr., who preceded her in death in 2015. Barbara is survived by her son Matt (Karen) Kendrick and their children Liza, Madeline, Sarah, and David; son Richard (Sharron) Kendrick; and daughter Katherine (Matthew) Ziff and their son Benjamin.
Barbara was devoted to family, friends, and nature with her love of gardening and wildlife especially birds. She was a founder and guiding force of ""The Book Club"" for many decades, worked at Old Salem Museums & Gardens, taught English and writing at Forsyth Technical and Community College, volunteered for The Children's Theatre of Winston-Salem and for Reynolda Gardens and was active at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in the altar guild and the prayer shawl knitting ministry. She loved North Carolina and its history, and she enjoyed travel to the coast and mountains with husband Leon. The home Barbara and Leon created together on Fireside Lane in Winston-Salem was a beautiful and peaceful haven also enjoyed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday April 18 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. Her family extends special thanks to the staff of Forest Heights Senior Living and to Hospice & Palliative Care Center for their compassionate and attentive care of Barbara.
