Barbara Jean Cockerham Galyean, born on May 3, 1935, in Surry County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 01, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and cherished memories. She was the daughter of Edward Forster Cockerham and Sara Emma Coe Cockerham. Barbara married the love of her life, Edward Haywood "Charlie" Galyean, on November 22, 1956, in Mt. Airy, NC. Their union spanned an incredible 58 years before Charlie's passing.
Together, Barbara and Charlie were blessed with three children: Charles Edward (Eddie) – wife Sharon, Randy Lee – wife Sheri, and Kimberly Jan Saleeby – husband David. She was a devoted mother and a guiding light to her children and their families. Barbara's family grew to include her grandchildren: Chris, Genna, Miranda, Ryan, Tanner, Tori, Whitley, Jake, Stacey and Josh, and numerous great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored and cherished deeply.
Barbara had a fulfilling life, retiring from Sara Lee Graphics in 1996, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. She spent her early retirement years in Mt. Dora, Florida, with Charlie, where they enjoyed buying and selling antiques, a shared passion that took them on many adventures.
Her love for the outdoors was evident in her fondness for her Koi pond and flower garden, lovingly crafted by Charlie. Barbara was a lover of sunshine, beach reads, and game nights, with a particular fondness for Rummikub. She had a sharp mind, often tackling crossword puzzles with ease and excelling at Jeopardy.
Barbara embraced technology, mastering her iPad, and becoming a successful eBay seller. She kept in touch with family and friends through Facebook and FaceTime, always eager to connect with her loved ones.
Barbara's life was enriched by her siblings, and she cherished her sister Phyllis's missionary work in Africa, continually supporting her endeavors. Her strong faith and belief in God were central to her life, and she found peace in her final journey, confident in her readiness to meet her heavenly father.
Barbara's legacy is one of love, family, and faith. She was a woman who fiercely loved and defended her family, a loyal friend, and a caring neighbor. Her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support will be profoundly missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested donations be made to The Sure Foundation Ministry PO Box 30332 Winston Salem, NC 27130 in support of African missions, a cause dear to her heart.
