Barbara Jean Carroll

Barbara Jean Carroll, 68, died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 30 in the fellowship hall at Arbor Acres, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. She was born in Greensboro, May 24, 1941 to the late Rev. Dr. Elwood and Betty Carroll. Barbara grew up in Methodist parsonages in Leaksville, Winston-Salem, Wadesboro, Hickory and Statesville. She was graduated from Statesville High School, class of '59, received a BA from Duke University in '63 and later earned a MA in library science from UNC-Greensboro. Barbara taught in the Forsyth and Guilford County public schools. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, retiring as media specialist at Sumner Elementary in Greensboro in 1995. She is survived by her sister, Betsy Carroll Powell of Hickory and husband John Powell; two nieces, Elizabeth Powell of Portland, OR and Stephanie Powell Devereux of Marietta, GA and husband Jay Devereux and son, Lawrence. Barbara enjoyed her family and many friends; instrumental and choral music; numerous Boston Terriers; growing flowers; and her most recent companion dog, Max. Special appreciation is expressed to the staff and residents of Arbor Acres for enriching Barbara's life for the past 2 ½ years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arbor Acres Employees Scholarship Fund or Resident Endowment Fund, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting Barbara Carroll's family.
