Audrey Craig Reavis passed peacefully into eternal life on Sunday, June 3, 2012. She was born on July 27, 1925 in Belews Creek, North Carolina to Lemma Duncan Craig and James Corbit Craig. One of seven children, she spent her early years assisting with farm and household chores. She excelled in academics and basketball. After graduating from Pine Hall High School she enrolled in City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Winton-Salem, passed the board exams and became a registered nurse. Her career in nursing spanned more than four decades beginning at City Memorial. Serving in many positions during her career and completing numerous courses, she became a certified infection control practitioner and nurse epidemiologist. She retired as Director of Infection Control and Employee Health at Forsyth Medical Center. After retirement, her adventurous spirit was satisfied by traveling to Europe, Asia and throughout the United States. She always enjoyed relaxing trips to the North and South Carolina beaches. At home Audrey loved working in her yard, growing flowers, watching birds and taking long walks throughout the neighborhood. Her back yard garden during the summers fulfilled her love of the outdoors and produced home grown vegetables for cooking and sharing. Audrey grew up attending Forest Chapel Methodist Church where she loved Sunday School, learning scripture and singing those old Methodist hymns. After a blind date meeting and marriage to Mack Reavis in 1946 she joined Fries Memorial Moravian Church where she remained active until health problems prevented her attendance. Audrey's family was her true love and joy. Her beloved husband, Wilton McLean Reavis, died suddenly in 1977. She is survived by her sons Wilton McLean Reavis, Jr. MD and wife Doris Ann of Lakeland, FL and James Kerr Reavis and wife Deitra of N. Wilkesboro, NC. Her adored grandchildren are Jonathan McLean Reavis of Greenville, SC, Brandon Leigh Reavis and Pam Creel of New Bern, NC, Kristen Reavis Patel and husband Chetan of Charleston, SC, Jessica Reavis Prescott and husband Todd of Raleigh, NC and Patrick Brennan Reavis and wife Tiffany of Ft. Mill, SC. Audrey was delighted with the arrival of great grandson Maxell Grayson Reavis of New Bern, NC. She has also left behind her extraordinary friend and companion, John Rutledge, who seems very much a part of the family. Her surviving sisters are Mary Catherine Craig Neal of Walnut Cove, NC and Minnie Gray Craig Smith and husband John of Walnut Cove, NC. Those who predeceased her are her parents and siblings Alene Craig Neal, J. W. Craig, Virginia Craig Moore, and Chisman Craig. There are many nieces and nephews who will miss Audrey. A funeral service will be held at Fries Memorial Moravian Church on Friday, June 8 at 3 pm with a graveside service following. There will be a visitation at 2 pm prior to the service at the church. The family appreciates the care and concern from the staff at Salemtowne assisted living unit.
