Ashlyn Fortson Hammett

Winston-Salem- ""Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates."" Proverbs 31:30-31. Ashlyn Fortson Hammett, 75, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Fortson, her loving mother, Cora K. Nicks, and step-father W.M. Nicks, and a beloved son-in-law, Sammie J. Quintana. Ashlyn loved life and wanted to see the world. From her trips to London, England and her trips to Garden City, SC, she wanted to see and do it all. She didn't have to make a bucket list, she lived hers. Ashlyn embraced life, she never looked at people as strangers, just as new friends she hadn't made yet. She had a sparkle in her eyes, a tender and gentle heart, and a smile that would light up any room. But most of all when you met her, you knew who the love of her life was…Jesus. Even in her last days she would say ""Let me tell you about my Jesus and what He has and is doing for me."" Ashlyn was someone who marched to a different beat, she would look outside the box and she would see what was, but most of all what could be. After her retirement from Piedmont Airlines as a reservation supervisor, she didn't slow down with her entrepreneurial spirit as she went on to own and help start many businesses that are still thriving today. The greatest joy of her life was her family. Left to cherish her memory are her two loving daughters, Rebecca Quintana of Lewisville and Lynn Key and husband Dennis of Winston-Salem; her loving grandchildren, Tabatha Painter and fianc郩 Nick Carlucci, Billy Wood and Kristy, Neal Lang and Dana of Oklahoma, Ashlyn Allen and Brad, and Alex Key. She also leaves behind eight Great-grandchildren and cherished loved ones. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, November 12, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Sandra Bovender, Pastor Janet Dixon, and Pastor Thomas Todd officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Thursday at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Dr. William Austin, he was not only her doctor, but she was blessed to call him a friend. Also, Debbie and the staff at Salem Gastroenterology Associates and all the medical staff that assisted in her care. A special thank you to the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for all their love and kindness, not only to our mother, but also our family.
